10 ways abuse makes you feel or behave

Abuse can happen in all kinds of relationships, there are also many different kinds of abuse. The most common include emotional, sexual, physical, financial, psychological and religious abuse, and coercive control. Each of these involve one person’s attempt to isolate, frighten and control another person.

Emotional and psychological abuse can be very hard to spot but the damage to a person’s mental and physical health can last long after the relationship has ended.

If you or a loved one is experiencing any of the behaviours listed below because of a partner or ex-partner, please remember that it’s not your fault and there is no shame in seeking help.

Do you find that you:

  1. Believe your partner’s behaviour will change if you change something about yourself.

  2. Walk on eggshells and try to guess ahead so you don’t cause conflict or make your partner angry.

  3. Always refer to your partner before making a decision - about anything.

  4. Constantly make excuses to friends, family or work colleagues for how your partner behaves.

  5. Feel hopeless or worthless, a failure at life, that if you were a better person your partner would treat you better.

  6. Always do what your partner wants instead of what you want to avoid conflict and being put down.

  7. Feel scared of how your partner may behave in social situations or at home.

  8. Feel empty and lose interest in your hobbies and interests that used to bring you joy.

  9. Are constantly on edge because you don’t know if your partner will criticise you or surprise you with a gift.

  10. Stay with your partner because you are afraid of what your partner would do if you broke up.

All forms of domestic abuse are not acceptable in any situation.

If you or someone you care about is experiencing abuse by a partner or ex-partner it’s important to remember that it’s not your fault and there is no shame in seeking help.
